When Holli, 52, chose to work with a mortgage broker to purchase her first home, she couldn't have imagined the impact that decision would have when she was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years later.
During the home loan process, Holli’s broker spoke to her about the risks of borrowing and offered her protection with ALI Group, which Holli ultimately chose to take. That decision meant that nine years on, Holli could make a claim on her Living Benefit (Trauma).
Making the claim was "very straightforward." Holli recalls the ALI Group claims team member she spoke to was "very helpful, very understanding, very sympathetic." Holli’s claim was approved in just nine days and she shortly received a lump-sum payment of $102,079.
Reflecting on the process, Holli that feels what she’s gotten most out of the experience is "peace of mind."
Holli still tries to go to work a couple of days a week to stay connected with colleagues, but her claim payout has now given her some breathing room and flexibility: "It's given me peace of mind, knowing I don't have to work if I can't, and without feeling pressured to be back at work when I'm not necessarily feeling up to it."
Holli has now become an advocate for other home buyers to consider protection as part of their backup plan: "I took it out myself, just to cover the money that I was having to put into the house."
She’s even encouraged her friends to look into protection as well: "Because you just never know. I didn't think this was going to happen to me."
