Adrienne's Story

“Even with the ongoing stuff, you know you have that money aside that you can actually use to keep yourself going.”

Adrienne's Story

Living with breast cancer

It was the radiation treatment for breast cancer that knocked Adrienne, 48, for six: “the fatigue really gets to you.”

But the impact of breast cancer on Adrienne wasn’t just physical: “it affects your work, your social life, your life all round, really.” It also became a source of financial stress for Adrienne who lives with her partner and two dogs in Melbourne.

Some difficult choices

Prior to making her claim, Adrienne found herself dipping into her savings as well as taking time off work while undergoing chemo treatment. Without the protection of her ALI Group policy that she took out through her broker when seeking finance for her home, Adrienne believes that she would have “struggled financially.”

With the loss of income and the cost of treatment, Adrienne contemplated making some difficult choices: “There’s not much else you can do. I might have had to redraw on my mortgage. It would have made things a lot harder.”

Discovering that her claim had been approved helped ease a lot of stress for Adrienne: “It meant that I didn’t have to worry about how I feed my dogs, how can I feed myself – that sort of thing. It made all those concerns a bit easier.”

Making a Claim: "It was just easy"

Adrienne found relief in how easy the claims process was: “The claims team were very helpful, and the process was pretty straightforward and very user friendly.” Adrienne’s claim benefit has helped relieve a huge load as she completes her treatment and returns to work. She believes that all brokers should offer protection to their clients in some shape or form.

As she tells it, “(Protection) makes things a lot easier. You’re not having to worry financially about what’s going to happen next. It’s the ongoing stuff that’s the killer. You still need to go and get your tests done, you still need to go get your medication and you’re always out of pocket.”

Thanks to her claim, “even with the ongoing stuff, you know you have that money aside that you can actually use to keep yourself going.”
