About Lachlan
Before 27-year-old Lachlan was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, he was living the dream in Tasmania with his pregnant fiancé and 4 year old, and working underground as a driller’s offsider in the mines.
The diagnosis, a shock for anyone let alone a young man such as Lachlan, set in train an undeniably hard road for him and his family. The health and wellbeing impacts aside, Lachlan hasn’t been able to work since. “You just couldn’t do it”.
Looking back
Lachlan chose to take out an ALI insurance policy back when he was buying his first family home. Having discussed this with his broker, it was a choice that just felt right to him. To his mind, “people take it up if they want it”, and as he reflected later, they’d have been in “a fair bit of strife” if they hadn’t.
Treatment
It’s no wonder Lachlan couldn’t work. Having endured 3 exhausting rounds of chemotherapy – which left him feeling, in his words, simply “horrendous” – at the time of our conversation Lachlan had made the temporary move to Victoria in preparation for a bone marrow transplant. “Assuming all goes well it will just be one and then a few months of recovery”.
Bravely, not only did Lachlan move to another state, he also chose to take the treatment journey alone to protect his family, including their soon-to-be new addition. “With COVID going ballistic in Victoria, it [was] the right decision to leave them home”.
Making a claim
“You know it was straight forward…what we needed from other people and doctors and that sort of stuff. But yeah, long story short, we just collated everything and sent it off to you guys and it was pretty well handled for us".
