Susan's Story

Susan took out ALI protection for her mortgage through her broker. As a single mum with two girls in high school, her broker explained that even though she was healthy, Susan needed a backup plan.

"I'm so grateful I never got round to cancelling my policy."

Susan took out ALI's protection for her mortgage through her broker. As a single mum with two girls in high school, her broker explained that even though she was healthy, Susan needed a backup plan. At one point Susan thought of cancelling her policy to try and save a little money. After talking with her broker, she decided to keep it.  Even then, neither could know how important that decision would become.

Diagnosis shock

Despite having no family history of breast cancer and no signs of feeling unwell, Susan found a lump in her breast when she was 43. Tests showed the lump to be cancer. It was a bittersweet moment – the results were devastating, but Susan was glad it'd been discovered. 

Rough on everyone

Susan then had one breast removed before embarking on a 6-month course of chemotherapy. The first round of chemo was aggressive, knocking Susan around, with her daughters also feeling the strain, needing counselling to help cope.

Time off work

While Susan's work had been very supportive, giving her the time off she needed, there was a limit to how far her sick pay could take her and the girls. 

"A very simple and straightforward process" 

Fortunately, Susan had kept her protection plan and got in touch. "They were very sympathetic and sent me out all the forms - which were very easy to fill out. It didn’t take you guys time". The entire process was fast and easy at a time Susan needed both: "It has been very professional and I have no issues with the way it’s been handled at all. It was a very simple and straightforward process."

Thankfully, Susan had  ALI protection cover after seeing her broker to organise her current home loan. This has allowed Susan to focus on her recovery…

"Thank you to everybody for the fact that you have helped me. As I said, I am so grateful and it's certainly allowed me to have the time off work to heal and fight this horrible thing."
